Creating a Fun Valance
by Nikki Willhite
Description: Instructions for making an easy valance for your windows.
Here is one of the more inexpensive, fun ways to make a custom
valance for the window over your kitchen sink, in a children's
room, or even on top of a shower curtain.
All you need is a wooden dowel or any strip of wood that you can
attach across the top of your window or shower, and some napkins.
Pick out some napkins that match the decor in your room. You can
make them yourself (vintage fabrics are always cute), or you can
buy them at the store.
Fold the napkins in half, diagonally, and drape them over the
wood, so that they hang down like triangles. Use as many napkins
as you need to cover the width of the wooden rod.
To add more interest, layer 2 rows of napkins. Make the back row
longer, perhaps in a solid color. Then add a shorter napkin,
perhaps a floral or check, in the front. You can even add
tassels, bells, or other ornaments on the points of the front
valance to rest on the back fabric.
Secure the napkins by stapling the long end on the top of the
rod. Before you begin, lay the rod out on your table and play
with the napkins until you find an arrangement you like. Mark the
rod, and then staple them down.
This is a fun treatment for a window, and looks best when done in
playful and colorful fabrics.
