Recessed Window Dressing Ideas

Description: Tips for decorating recessed windows.

Q: I have a large window in my living room which is recessed about 1 ft. It is a small room and doesn't have a ton of wall space due to the radiator, fireplace, two very large open doorways to the dining room and foyer. Therefore, the only place for the couch is right up against the recessed window. I need to put up some sort of window dressing for privacy reasons (since the window faces the street) and to reduce the glare on the TV in the corner opposite the window. Also, since there is a large open doorway in between the living room and dining room, I'd like a simple, elegant look that will match the look and feel of the dining room. I like the look of long sheer pannels with scarf draped over the top as a valance, but I don't know how I could pull this off with a recessed window and a couch pressed up against it.

A: I have a bow window in a small living room. I could not find bow rods to fit inside of the window frame. (Found plenty of bay rods by the way.) My solution was cup hooks with wire for a rod with lace panels for each of the window panes. I then hung the valance the traditional way (on the outside) for the top. I know it sounds funny but you would never know they were hung that way. By hanging them inside the frame we still have the open feel the window as it was meant to be. And I share a laugh or two when people come over and ask, "how did you do that?". It sounds like tension rods might do the trick for you. But the result should be the same.

A: You don't necessarily have to put the curtains inside the window frame..if the wall is mostly window why not just make the whole wall a wall of fabric with medium weight drapes..not to over bearing and not to thin that the light still gets through..maybe a soft fabric..use a nice fancy rod and do tab tops with a scarf over them..or something along those lines..then you could just pull them back a bit for light. The sofa does not need to be touching the wall either..it can be pulled away a bit to let the drapes fall naturally.
