Tips on Repairing Mini Blinds
by Rob Buenaventura

Description: How to repair mini blinds so you don't have to buy new ones.

Repairing mini blinds is easier than you think though most people are tempted to simply toss them aside once they’ve been damaged. Before you begin repairing your blinds you’ll need some basic equipment. It depends on what has been lost what you will need in order to make the repairs. You may need such equipment as replacement slats, lift cords, ladder tape, ladder string, scissors, or a utility knife of some sort in order to make the necessary repairs.

You will need to remove the mini blinds from the window before repairing them. This will allow you to manipulate the slats into a fully opened and extended position. Remove the blind from its brackets and lay it on a large flat surface that allows plenty of room in which to manipulate the blinds and work on them.

Remove the end caps in order to take the blind apart. You will find end caps on the upper and bottom rails as well as the knots or clips that hold the blinds together. Once this is done you can see how the mechanism works. If you need to replace the string ladders, be sure to remove from the rails. If they do not need to be replaced you should only need to remove the lift cord ends.

If you need to remove damaged slats or replace missing slats you should add the new slats to the ladder cord by threading the cords into the new slats then attaching them to the bottom rail. You should reattach the end caps and voila! You’re finished.

Replacing the lift cords or string ladders requires a little more effort. You must first pull the cord as far as it will go towards the top box. Then you must slide the cords off the slats in order to replace them. Once this is accomplished attach the new strings to each of the slats then attach them to the tube of the bottom rail. Take care that all slats are threaded right so that they will operate correctly when attempting to open and close them.

The final step in this simple process is the actual re hanging of the blinds. Basic safety precautions include wearing gloves in order to protect your hands from potentially sharp plastic or laminate slats. You should also mark where the cords belong in the box to save yourself from wasting a lot of time trying to figure that out later in the process.
