If you're tired of the same old look in your kitchen, perhaps it's time to redecorate with a whole new theme. Although it's certainly not necessary to have an overall theme when decorating the kitchen, adhering to a theme can actually make your decorating process much easier.
A theme will provide you with decorating guidelines you can follow, making it a simple process to choose a color palette, accessories and wall art. Although there are plenty of popular kitchen themes you could choose from, it can be a lot of fun to come up with your own special look. If you are in search of unique kitchen decorating themes to try, here are a few that you can use as inspiration.
Animal and Bird Themes
If you automatically visualize cows, pigs and chickens when you think about animal and bird kitchen decorating themes, think again. Although you could certainly create an attractive kitchen using any of these popular favorites, why not try choosing an animal or bird that walks a slightly different path? Instead of chickens, why not try parrots or flamingos? Instead of cows or pigs, an elephant theme could be fun.
When choosing an unusual theme, you won't be able to find as many ready-made kitchen decor items in stores, of course. However, don't let that discourage you. Instead, simply use non-kitchen decor items in surprising new ways. For example, a small end table with an elephant base could be used under the kitchen window to support pots of kitchen herbs. Or, decorate a large potted plant with a pink plastic flamingo lawn ornament, adding a fun retro look to your kitchen. No matter what theme you choose, you'll probably be able to find fun decorating accessories online if you do a few searches. If you are the artistic or crafty type, you could probably make a lot of your own unique kitchen decorating accessories, designed to perfectly match your chosen theme.
Seasonal Themes
If you enjoy adding a whole new look to your kitchen on a fairly regular basis, why not decorate it with a seasonal theme year-round? As the seasons change, you'll have a minimum of four opportunities every year to give your kitchen a whole new look - spring, summer, autumn and winter. It can actually be quite easy and inexpensive to implement a seasonal decorating theme, especially if you plan ahead for the following year. At the end of each season, stores usually have clearance sales to make room for fresh merchandise. This can provide you with a great opportunity to pick up seasonal table linens, placemats, centerpieces, towels, potholders, and wall art at great prices. Then, simply put these items away until the following year. When using a seasonal theme to decorate your kitchen, it can be helpful to look for similar items for each season. For example, if you have a place on your wall for a beautiful snow scene, you could also hang a similarly sized and shaped spring, summer or autumn painting or print in the same area. To make things easy, store your off-season kitchen decor in color-coded plastic storage tubs.
